all star hurling odds - hurley and sliotar

Most lads hear “All-Star hurling odds” and think Hurler of the Year. Fair enough — that’s the headline award. But books sometimes price the team: will Player X make the 15, how many All-Stars will County Y get, or who fills a specific position. That’s a different maths problem. This page is about those team / positional markets only — not the Player of the Year vote.

18+ only. Every name, county label and price here is an invented example for the maths, not a tip. Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by the GRAI / not licensed in Ireland. Gambling Care: 1800 936 725 (NI: 08000 886 725), free, confidential, 24/7.

Team markets vs Player of the Year

If you want Hurler of the Year, Young Hurler, or the broad awards picture across both codes, use our GAA All Star betting guide and the dedicated hurling player of the year odds page. Those cover voting panels, GPA ballots and award narratives.

Here we stay on the All-Star hurling team: fifteen positions, nominations shortlists, and the markets that settle on who is named (or how many names a county collects). Same autumn ceremony, different book — and usually a fatter margin because the board is thinner.

How the hurling All-Star team is shaped (betting view)

In broad terms the process looks like this each autumn:

  1. Nominations. A long shortlist across the fifteen positions (goalkeeper, full-back line, half-back line, midfield, half-forward line, full-forward line).
  2. Panel selection. A selectors’ panel (traditionally heavy on GAA journalists) picks one player per position from the nominees.
  3. Reveal. The XV is announced at the banquet; that is usually what settles “to make the All-Stars” markets.

Exact shortlist sizes and dates move year to year — check the GAA’s own release for the current season. For pricing, you only need three ideas: who gets nominated, how often nominees in that position convert, and how hard champion-county bias pulls the panel.

Markets you might see on “All-Star hurling odds”

Many Irish high-street apps never open these. When they do, limits are often tiny and the overround is closer to a novelty board than a Munster final 1X2. Line-shop if you can; more often you’ll only find one price.

Nomination → selection probability tree

A clean way to think about “to make the All-Stars” is a two-step tree:

  1. Chance the player is nominated in a usable position.
  2. Chance they are selected given nomination (and given who else is on that position shortlist).

Invented example for three half-forwards after a big championship:

Player (invented)P(nominated)P(selected | nominated)P(makes team)Fair decimal
HF-A (champion county, final MOTM)95%72%68.4%1.46
HF-B (beaten finalist, top scorer)90%48%43.2%2.31
HF-C (semi-finalist, consistent)70%28%19.6%5.10

Multiply the two steps. Don’t skip the nomination leg: a brilliant club man who never makes the inter-county shortlist is 0% for the team market even if the pub reckons he’s class.

Selection given nomination is where champion bias bites. If the All-Ireland winners put three names into one line, those three cannibalise each other — vote/attention splits — and a beaten finalist can sneak the jersey. That’s the same story as Player of the Year vote-splitting, but it shows up position by position on the team sheet.

Champion-team bias, quantified (invented)

Historically, All-Ireland hurling champions take a chunky share of the XV. For a worked model, pretend your honest prior is:

County typeExpected All-Stars (invented prior)
All-Ireland champions7.2
Beaten finalists3.1
Semi-finalists (each)1.6
Rest of the pack (shared)1.5

That already sums to 15. Real seasons wobble — a semi-finalist can steal four, a champion can “only” get five if the final was messy — but the prior explains why “champions most All-Stars” is often odds-on, and why over/unders on the winners’ haul sit near 6.5 or 7.5.

Strip a book’s overround before you decide the prior is wrong. If “County Champ most All-Stars” is 1.40 (71.4% implied) and your model says 62%, you’re looking at thin or negative value even when the story feels obvious.

Worked board: most All-Stars by county

Invented four-county board after the final:

County (label)Book priceImplied %Model %EV per €1
Champions1.4569.0%61%−11.6%
Finalists3.7526.7%22%−17.5%
Semi A9.0011.1%10%−10.0%
Semi B / field15.006.7%7%+5.0%

Implied sum ≈ 113.5% — a 13.5% book, heavy for a four-runner outright. On this board only the long field price clears your model, and even that is a small edge with huge variance (one rogue panel pick swings the whole bet). Most of the time the honest play is to pass.

Positional markets: why full-forward ≠ midfield

Not every jersey is equally predictable:

If a book prices “Player Z to be named at centre-forward” rather than “to make the team”, you must fold in the chance they’re named in a different forward slot. A dual-threat forward can make the XV but miss the exact position market. Read the market title twice.

Settlement: the bit that catches people

Before you bet, check:

Screenshot the rules when you strike. Novelty markets change wording between firms.

Building a fair price in 15 minutes

  1. List the fifteen positions.
  2. For each, write 3–5 realistic nominees (invented labels are fine for practice).
  3. Assign each nominee a selection share that sums to ~100% per position (champion bias baked in).
  4. Sum a player’s shares across positions if they could land in more than one slot.
  5. County total = sum of that county’s players’ make-team probabilities (careful: they’re not independent — use a simple simulation if you’re serious).
  6. Compare to the board after removing overround.

Independence is the trap. If you just add seven champion forwards each at 50%, you’ll “expect” 3.5 forwards from one county and blow past fifteen overall. Cap totals with a quick Monte Carlo in a spreadsheet: draw one name per position from your shares, count, repeat 20,000 times.

Simple simulation sketch (invented)

Suppose you only model the six “skill” forward + midfield slots with heavy champion presence. After 20,000 draws you might see:

Champion county All-Stars (all 15)Share of sims
4 or fewer8%
514%
622%
724%
818%
9+14%

That distribution is why an over 7.5 on the champions can look juicy in the pub and still be a coin-flip once you price it. Match the line to your sim median, not to last year’s haul alone.

Linking to the championship markets

All-Star team prices are downstream of who lifted Liam MacCarthy and who lit up the provinces. If you’re still in championship mode, these sit upstream:

Club All-Ireland hurling is a different competition entirely — see hurling club All-Ireland odds when that page is live in the queue/site.

Staking and bankroll

Treat All-Star team markets like festival specials, not like a Munster round-robin match. Suggested rules:

Crypto angle (optional)

If you use a crypto sportsbook for GAA specials, coverage is hit-and-miss — many never list All-Star markets at all. When they do, keep the stake in a stablecoin so the coin price between nomination day and banquet night doesn’t rewrite your exposure. Cloudbet’s terms bring in identity checks at cumulative deposits of about US$2,200; withdraw guidance typically shows the network fee before you confirm and processing is often within about 24 hours.

Licensing and staying in control

The GRAI began issuing remote betting licences under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, with the first B2C remote betting licences commencing on 1 July 2026. Cloudbet is Curaçao-licensed and not on the GRAI register, so Irish-regulator protections do not apply there. Autumn awards chatter is pure craic until it becomes a nightly scroll of novelty prices. Set a hard euro cap for All-Star betting before nominations drop. If it stops being a laugh, call Gambling Care on 1800 936 725 (NI 08000 886 725). More help on the responsible gambling page.

Common mistakes on All-Star team bets

A few patterns burn bankrolls every autumn:

Write your make-team percentages on paper before you open the app. If you cannot beat the de-vigged board by a few points, there is no bet.

Thin markets and stake limits

All-Star team boards are novelty-adjacent. Even when a price looks long versus your model, the book may only let you on for €5 or €10. That changes the job: you are not building a season-long ROI track from these tickets. Treat them as optional spice on top of championship match betting.

If two books both list “Player X to make the All-Stars”, do not assume identical settlement. One may require the player to be named in a specific position; another may pay on any jersey. Screenshot the wording with the ticket.

Watch for each-way style packaging on outrights (e.g. top two counties for most All-Stars). Place terms on novelty lists are often poor — a second-place pay-out that still leaves you behind after overround is not a bargain just because it feels “safer”.

Calendar: when information actually moves

The highest-quality work is usually between the final and the nomination list: you still have uncertainty (which is where prices hide), but you know who lifted the cup and who played the big games.

My take

All-Star team odds are a nomination-and-selection tree with champion-county gravity, not a rebadged Hurler of the Year market. Build position shares, watch for cannibalisation inside the winners’ panel, strip the novelty overround, and only bet when a make-team or county-total price is clearly long versus your sim. Most boards won’t clear that bar — and passing is a perfectly good All-Star tip.

Questions players ask

Are All-Star hurling odds the same as Hurler of the Year?

No. This page covers team / positional / county-total markets. Hurler of the Year is a separate vote — see our GAA All Star and hurling player of the year guides.

How do I price a player to make the All-Star team?

Estimate P(nominated) times P(selected given nomination), and adjust for rival nominees in the same position and champion-county bias.

Why do All-Ireland champions dominate the XV?

Voters and selectors weigh big-game displays heavily. Champions still do not take every jersey — beaten finalists and standout semi-finalists take a share.

What settles a make-the-All-Stars bet?

Usually the official 15 named on the night. Read the bookmaker rules for nominations-only markets, replacements and county totals.

Are the players and prices on this page real?

No. All labels, percentages and odds are invented examples for the maths.

Is Cloudbet licensed in Ireland?

No. Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by the GRAI.
