Asian handicap looks like algebra the first time you see it on a coupon: home side −0.75 at 2.15, away side +0.75 at 1.80. It's actually one of the simplest and fairest markets in football once it clicks, and it's a favourite of sharper punters for a reason. It takes the draw out of the picture, the margins are usually thinner than on match odds, and some lines give you your money back when things go only half right. This guide walks through every line you'll meet, with euro examples, so you know exactly how your bet settles before kick-off.
18+ only. This is general information, not betting or financial advice. Teams and prices below are illustrations from a simple model, not tips. Cloudbet, which we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), so Irish complaint routes don't apply to it. Asian handicap in 60 seconds
- One team gets a head start (a plus number) and the other a deficit (a minus number), measured in goals.
- You add the handicap to your team's score at full time and see who "wins" the adjusted game.
- There are only two outcomes to bet on. No draw option. That's what makes it "Asian": it comes from markets popular in Asia that cut football down to two sides.
- Half-goal lines (−0.5, +1.5) can't end level, so they win or lose.
- Whole-goal lines (0, −1, +2) can end level, and then your stake is refunded (a "push").
- Quarter lines (−0.25, −0.75, +1.25) split your stake across the two nearest lines, so you can win half or lose half.
- Settlement is on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties don't count.
How the handicap is applied
Say Team A is at home to Team B and you back Team A −1. The game finishes 2-0. Take one goal off Team A: 1-0. Your bet wins. If it finishes 2-1, the adjusted score is 1-1, so it's a push and you get your stake back. A 1-0 win works the same way: take one off and it's 0-0, another push. Here's the full picture, because this is where people trip:
| Final score | Team A margin | Team A −1 adjusted | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-0 | +3 | +2 | Win |
| 2-0 or 3-1 | +2 | +1 | Win |
| 1-0 or 2-1 | +1 | 0 | Push (refund) |
| Draw | 0 | −1 | Lose |
| Team A loses | negative | below 0 | Lose |
The only thing that matters is the winning margin. The handicap is just a number you add to it.
Every common line, settled
Here's €10 on the home team at a range of lines and example prices. The columns show the profit or loss depending on the home team's winning margin at full time:
| Home line @ price | Loses by 1 | Draw | Wins by 1 | Wins by 2 | Wins by 3+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (draw no bet) @ 1.60 | −€10 | €0 (refund) | +€6.00 | +€6.00 | +€6.00 |
| −0.25 @ 1.80 | −€10 | −€5 (half lost) | +€8.00 | +€8.00 | +€8.00 |
| −0.5 @ 1.95 | −€10 | −€10 | +€9.50 | +€9.50 | +€9.50 |
| −0.75 @ 2.15 | −€10 | −€10 | +€5.75 (half won) | +€11.50 | +€11.50 |
| −1 @ 2.50 | −€10 | −€10 | €0 (refund) | +€15.00 | +€15.00 |
| −1.25 @ 2.90 | −€10 | −€10 | −€5 (half lost) | +€19.00 | +€19.00 |
| −1.5 @ 3.40 | −€10 | −€10 | −€10 | +€24.00 | +€24.00 |
The away side's lines are the mirror image. Away +0.5 wins if the away team draws or wins. Away +1 wins if they draw or win, and pushes if they lose by exactly one. Away +0.25 is half on 0 and half on +0.5. On a draw, the 0 half is refunded and the +0.5 half wins, so you get a half-win. If the away side wins, both halves win. If they lose by any margin, you lose the lot.
Quarter lines, explained properly
Quarter lines are where Asian handicap gets its reputation for being confusing, but there's one rule: your stake is split in two, half on each of the nearest half and whole lines.
| Line | Split into | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| −0.25 | Half on 0, half on −0.5 | Win: full win. Draw: half refunded, half lost. |
| +0.25 | Half on 0, half on +0.5 | Win: full win. Draw: half refunded, half won. |
| −0.75 | Half on −0.5, half on −1 | Win by 2+: full win. Win by 1: half won, half refunded. |
| +0.75 | Half on +0.5, half on +1 | Win or draw: full win. Lose by 1: half refunded, half lost. |
| −1.25 | Half on −1, half on −1.5 | Win by 2+: full win. Win by 1: half refunded, half lost. |
| −1.75 | Half on −1.5, half on −2 | Win by 3+: full win. Win by 2: half won, half refunded. |
Worked through: €10 on Team A −0.75 at 2.15, and they win 1-0. €5 is on −0.5, which wins: €5 × 2.15 = €10.75 back. €5 is on −1, which pushes: €5 back. Total €15.75 for a €5.75 profit. If they'd won 2-0, both halves win and you'd get €21.50.
A goals model: what's a fair price on each line?
To see how the lines relate to each other, let's model a made-up match. The home side is expected to score about 1.6 goals and the away side about 1.0. A standard goals model (it treats goals as arriving randomly at a steady rate, which is rough but widely used) gives this spread of winning margins:
| Home margin | Chance |
|---|---|
| Loses by 3+ | about 2.4% |
| Loses by 2 | 6.1% |
| Loses by 1 | 15.2% |
| Draw | 25.0% |
| Wins by 1 | 24.3% |
| Wins by 2 | 15.7% |
| Wins by 3 | 7.5% |
| Wins by 4+ | about 3.8% |
That works out at home 51.3%, draw 25.0%, away 23.7% on match odds. Now here are the fair prices (no bookie margin) for the home team on each Asian line:
| Home line | Wins | Push | Loses | Fair price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +0.5 | 76.3% | n/a | 23.7% | 1.31 |
| 0 | 51.3% | 25.0% | 23.7% | 1.46 |
| −0.25 | half on 0, half on −0.5 | 1.70 | ||
| −0.5 | 51.3% | n/a | 48.7% | 1.95 |
| −0.75 | half on −0.5, half on −1 | 2.24 | ||
| −1 | 27.1% | 24.3% | 48.7% | 2.80 |
| −1.25 | half on −1, half on −1.5 | 3.25 | ||
| −1.5 | 27.1% | n/a | 72.9% | 3.70 |
| −2 | 11.3% | 15.7% | 72.9% | 7.43 |
Notice how each quarter step moves the price smoothly. That's the beauty of Asian lines: you can pick exactly how much risk you want. Want protection if your team only draws? Go 0 or +0.25. Confident they'll win well? −0.75 or −1 pays more and still gives you something back on a one-goal win.
Checking real prices against the model
Once you have a fair price, you can see whether a bookie's offer is worth taking. Expected profit or loss per €10, using the model above:
| Bet | Price offered | Expected per €10 |
|---|---|---|
| Home −0.5 | 1.85 | −€0.50 |
| Home −0.5 | 1.95 | €0.00 (break-even) |
| Home −0.75 | 2.05 | −€0.75 |
| Home −0.75 | 2.20 | −€0.16 |
| Home −1 | 2.45 | −€0.94 |
| Home −1 | 2.60 | −€0.54 |
| Home 0 (draw no bet) | 1.50 | +€0.20 |
| Away +0.5 | 2.05 | −€0.03 |
| Away +0.5 | 2.25 | +€0.95 |
| Away +1 | 1.62 | +€0.31 |
The model is only as good as your goal expectations, so don't treat these as gospel. The point is the method: estimate the margin distribution, work out the fair price, and only bet when the price beats it.
Asian handicap vs match odds vs European handicap
| Match odds (1X2) | Asian handicap | European (3-way) handicap | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outcomes | 3 | 2 | 3, including a "handicap draw" |
| Refunds possible | No | Yes, on whole and quarter lines | No |
| Typical margin | Often 5% to 8% | Often 3% to 6% on big leagues | Often higher |
| Good for | Simple bets, accas | Backing favourites to win well, or underdogs to keep it close | Specific margin views |
Two-way markets usually carry a thinner margin than three-way ones, which is a big reason why regular punters gravitate to Asian lines. A typical AH pair at 1.95 / 1.91 adds up to about 103.6%, while a 1X2 market might total 106% or more.

When Asian handicap makes sense
- Short favourites. Backing a team at 1.30 to win is often poor value. A −1 or −1.25 line at a bigger price can make more sense if you think they'll win comfortably.
- Underdogs you think will compete. +0.5 or +0.75 gives you a winning bet on a draw and some protection on a narrow defeat.
- Tight games. 0 (draw no bet) or ±0.25 for when you have a slight lean but a draw is very possible.
- Cup ties and big mismatches, where the 1X2 favourite price is too short to bother with.
Our guide to betting on corners covers handicaps in a different market, and the odds calculator converts any price into an implied chance.
Live Asian handicap
In-play, the handicap applies to the rest of the match from the score when you bet, on many sites. So if it's 1-0 and you back the home team −0.5 "live", some bookmakers settle only on goals scored after your bet, while others use the full-time score. This matters enormously. Always check the settlement rules on the live market before betting, because the two conventions give completely different results.
Common mistakes
- Thinking −1 loses on a one-goal win. It's a push.
- Forgetting quarter lines split the stake, then being confused by a "half win" in your history.
- Assuming extra time counts. It doesn't.
- Mixing up live AH conventions (score from the bet vs full-time score).
- Putting Asian handicaps in big accas. A push usually reduces that leg to 1.00 and a half-loss cuts it in two, which is fine, but the margins still multiply.
- Backing the favourite on a big line just because it pays more, without asking whether they really win by two.
A quick pre-bet checklist
- What winning margin do you actually expect? Pick the line that matches that view.
- Is it a half, whole or quarter line, and what happens on a one-goal win or a draw?
- Convert the price to an implied chance and compare it with your estimate.
- Check two or three bookies. A 0.05 to 0.10 gap on an AH line is common and makes a real difference over time.
- Read the live settlement rules if betting in-play.
- Stake small and the same each time. Don't up your stakes after a loss.
Is Asian handicap betting legal in Ireland?
Yes. Betting is legal for adults in Ireland, and the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) licenses operators, with the first remote betting licences having commenced on 1 July 2026. GRAI-licensed bookmakers come with Irish protections and complaint routes. Offshore sites such as Cloudbet aren't GRAI-licensed, so those protections don't apply. See our guide to whether online betting is legal in Ireland.

Our take
Asian handicap is football betting with the draw stripped out and the maths made fairer. Learn the three kinds of line, remember that quarter lines split your stake, and price each line from the winning margins you expect. Do that and AH becomes the most flexible tool on the coupon, and usually the one with the thinnest margin.
Questions players ask
What does -0.5 mean in Asian handicap?
Your team must win the match for the bet to win. A draw or defeat loses. There's no refund on half-goal lines.
What does -1 mean in Asian handicap?
Your team must win by two or more goals to win the bet. A one-goal win is a push, so your stake is refunded. A draw or defeat loses.
What does -0.75 mean in Asian handicap?
Your stake is split, half on -0.5 and half on -1. A win by two or more pays in full. A one-goal win pays half at your odds and refunds the other half.
Is Asian handicap 0 the same as draw no bet?
Yes. You win if your team wins, get your stake back on a draw, and lose if they lose.
Does Asian handicap include extra time?
No. Asian handicap markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time unless the market clearly says otherwise.
Is Cloudbet licensed in Ireland?
No. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and isn't licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, so Irish complaint routes don't apply.
