Festival week, a quarter past one on a Tuesday. You're in the pub, at work, or standing in a field at Prestbury Park, and the Supreme is about to go off. You open the app, the price you wanted has gone, the bet slip spins, and by the time it accepts, they're jumping the first. Most Cheltenham bets in Ireland now go through a phone, and the app you use makes more difference than people think. Here's what to look for, what to set up before Tuesday, and the small settings that quietly cost punters money all week.
18+ only. We don't rank or recommend specific bookmaker apps here, and every price and stake is made up to show the sums. Cloudbet, which we link to, is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI).

Why Cheltenham is a stress test for any betting app
The Festival runs over four days, Tuesday to Friday, with seven races a day. That's 28 races in four afternoons, many with big fields, plenty of each-way betting and constant price movement. Apps that cope fine with a quiet Saturday can struggle when half the country logs in at once. The things that matter in Festival week are a bit different from what matters the rest of the year:
- Speed under load. Does the bet slip still confirm quickly two minutes before the off?
- Clear racing terms. Can you see best odds guaranteed, each-way places and fractions without digging?
- Good racecards. Form, trainer, jockey, weights and official ratings in a layout you can read on a small screen.
- Non-runner updates. Late withdrawals change prices and each-way terms.
- Payments that just work. Deposits that land instantly and withdrawals that don't get stuck in checks.
If you're new to Festival betting, our Cheltenham betting guide covers the races, the bet types and how the week flows. This page sticks to the phone in your hand.
The features that matter, and how to check them
| Feature | Why it matters at Cheltenham | How to check before Tuesday |
|---|---|---|
| Best odds guaranteed (BOG) | Paid at SP if it's bigger than the price you took | Look for a BOG label on the race and read the Festival terms |
| Each-way terms on the bet slip | Places and fraction change the value of every e/w bet | Open a big-field handicap and see if terms show on the slip |
| Extra places | A fifth or sixth place can be worth more than a slightly bigger price | Check if extra-place races come with shorter prices |
| Price-change settings | Decides what happens when the price moves as you bet | Find it in settings and choose on purpose |
| Cash out | Lets you settle early, at a cost | See whether it's offered on singles, each-way and multiples |
| Racecards and form | Saves flipping between apps and websites | Open any race and see how much detail is there |
| Streaming or replays | Watching on your phone, or catching up afterwards | Read the streaming conditions; they vary |
| Responsible gambling tools | Limits and time-outs that work during a long week | Find deposit limits and time-out options in your account |

The price-change setting most people never look at
Prices move constantly in the last few minutes before a Festival race. Most apps have a setting that decides what happens if the price changes between tapping it and the bet going through. It usually comes in three flavours:
| Setting | You tap 7/1, and it moves to 6/1 | You tap 7/1, and it moves to 8/1 |
|---|---|---|
| Accept any price change | Bet placed at 6/1 | Bet placed at 8/1 |
| Accept higher prices only | Bet rejected, you're asked again | Bet placed at 8/1 |
| Accept no changes | Bet rejected | Bet rejected |
"Accept any" is the fastest but can quietly give you worse prices all week, especially on horses being heavily backed. "Higher only" is a sensible middle ground for most people. If you're betting right before the off, remember that a rejected bet can mean no bet at all, and decide whether you'd rather have that or a slightly shorter price.
Each-way terms: check them on the slip, every time
Each-way betting is huge at Cheltenham, and the terms are part of the price. A typical big-field handicap pays a quarter of the odds for four places, but plenty of books offer extra places on some races during the Festival, and terms can differ between apps on the same race. Before you confirm any each-way bet, check three things on the slip:
- How many places are being paid.
- What fraction of the odds the place part pays.
- Whether a late non-runner has changed either of those.
A quick worked example: €5 each-way (€10 total) at 16/1 in a big handicap. With four places at 1/4, a placed finish returns €5 × (4 + 1) = €25 from the place part, so you're €15 up on your €10. If the same horse finishes fifth and one app paid five places while another paid four, that's the difference between a €15 profit and a €10 loss on the same horse.
Cash out: handy, but know what it costs
Cash out lets you settle a bet before the result. At Cheltenham it comes up most often with ante-post bets whose price has collapsed. Here's a rough way to see whether an offer is fair, using made-up numbers:
- You took €10 at 10/1 (decimal 11.00) in January.
- On the morning of the race the horse is 4/1 (decimal 5.00).
- A rough fair value of your bet now is €10 × 11.00 ÷ 5.00 = €22.
- The app offers €19 to cash out.
That €3 gap is roughly what you pay for certainty. Sometimes that's worth it, maybe the stake has become bigger than you're comfortable with, or the ground has gone against the horse. But cashing out every time something looks wobbly is a steady leak over a season. If you want to lock in some profit but keep an interest, a partial cash out, where offered, lets you do both. Our Cheltenham live betting guide covers in-running decisions in more detail.
More than one app: the case for comparing prices
Having two or three accounts lets you take the best price on each bet. It sounds like a lot of fuss for small differences, but it adds up. Say you have 20 bets of €10 across the week and four of them win. If you get half a point bigger on each winner, say 13/2 instead of 6/1, each one pays €5 more:
| One app | Best of three apps | |
|---|---|---|
| Winners | 4 at an average of 6/1 | 4 at an average of 13/2 |
| Returns from winners | €280 | €300 |
| Total staked | €200 | €200 |
| Profit | €80 | €100 |
Same horses, same stakes, an extra €20 for a few extra taps. Over a year of racing, the difference is bigger. Our odds calculator helps if you want to compare fractional prices quickly. Just keep the accounts manageable, and keep your limits across all of them, not just one.
Bet builders and racing multiples on apps
More apps now offer racing bet builders, letting you combine things like a winner and a jockey's performance in one race, or several selections across a card. They're fun, but combined selections usually carry more margin than singles, and related selections may be priced with that in mind. Treat them as a small-stake extra, not the main event. Our Cheltenham bet builder guide walks through how they're priced.

Streaming and replays
Many bookmaker apps offer racing streams or replays, but the rules differ. Some need a funded account, some need a bet on that race, some only show certain meetings, and what's available can depend on where you are and the broadcast rights for that meeting. If watching on your phone matters to you, read the streaming conditions in advance rather than finding out at 1:29 on Tuesday. And remember a phone stream usually runs a few seconds behind the live pictures, so it's for watching, not for betting in-running against people at the track.
Set up before Tuesday: a checklist
Most Festival-week frustration comes from things that could have been sorted the week before. Run through this list early:
- Update the app and make sure you can log in, including any two-factor step.
- Finish identity checks now. Verification can take longer when everyone's signing up at once.
- Set deposit limits for the week before you start, while you're thinking clearly.
- Test a small withdrawal so you know how long it takes and what's needed.
- Choose your price-change setting on purpose.
- Check the BOG and each-way terms for the Festival on each app.
- Turn on non-runner and result notifications if the app has them.
- Write down your plan and budget for each day.
Betting with crypto on your phone
If you use a crypto sportsbook, the phone experience is a bit different. Cloudbet runs in your mobile browser, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. A few things to keep in mind for Festival week:
- Deposit early. Crypto deposits need network confirmations, which can take a few minutes or longer when networks are busy. Don't leave it until the horses are going to post.
- Use the right network. USDT exists on several networks; sending on the wrong one can lose the funds.
- Think about the coin. If you deposit in Bitcoin, its price can move during the week. A stablecoin keeps your balance steadier.
- Check racing terms. Look at what each-way terms, BOG and settlement rules apply before you assume they match an Irish high-street bookmaker.
Our pages on crypto betting on horse racing and crypto deposit betting sites go further into coins, networks and deposits.
Keeping your account safe
- Download apps only from the official app stores or the operator's own website.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where offered.
- Be wary of texts or social posts offering "Cheltenham free bets" with a link. Go to the app directly instead.
- Don't save your password on a shared phone or tablet.
- If you're betting on pub wifi, log out when you're done.
Licensing: which apps are licensed in Ireland
Online betting in Ireland is licensed by the GRAI, which began issuing remote betting licences in July 2026. An app licensed by the GRAI comes with Irish rules on things like complaints and safer gambling tools. You can check an operator against the GRAI's register before you sign up. Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by the GRAI, so those Irish protections don't apply there. For the wider picture, see our guides to the best sports betting app in Ireland, betting apps that work in Ireland and whether online betting is legal in Ireland.
Use the safety tools, especially this week
Having the app in your pocket for four days of racing makes it very easy to bet more often than you planned. Most apps have tools that help:
| Tool | What it does | When to use it at Cheltenham |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can add in a day, week or month | Set a weekly limit before the Festival starts |
| Reality check | Reminds you how long you've been logged in | Useful on long afternoons in the pub |
| Time-out | Locks your account for a set period | If you've hit your budget by Wednesday |
| Self-exclusion | Blocks you for months or longer | If betting has become a problem |
A simple rule of thumb: set your budget for the four days before Tuesday, split it across the days, and don't top up mid-week to chase a bad day.
Mistakes that cost punters money in Festival week
- Leaving the price-change setting on "accept any" and never noticing the shorter prices.
- Not checking each-way terms on the slip, and getting four places when another app paid five.
- Cashing out every bet that looks shaky.
- Waiting until race day to sign up and getting stuck in identity checks.
- Depositing crypto at the last minute and missing the race.
- Topping up after a bad Tuesday to try to win it back.

Questions players ask
What should I look for in a Cheltenham betting app?
Fast bet confirmation under heavy traffic, clear best odds guaranteed and each-way terms, good racecards, sensible price-change settings, reliable payments and easy-to-find limits.
What does accept higher prices only mean?
If the price drifts as you bet, the bet goes through at the bigger price. If it shortens, the bet is rejected and you're asked again.
Is cash out worth it at Cheltenham?
Sometimes, but the offer is usually below the bet's fair value. Compare it with your stake times the price you took, divided by the current price.
Should I have more than one betting app for Cheltenham?
Two or three accounts let you take the best price on each bet, which adds up over the week. Keep limits across all of them.
Can I bet on Cheltenham with crypto on my phone?
Crypto sportsbooks like Cloudbet run in a mobile browser. Deposit well before race time, use the right network, and check the racing terms.
Is Cloudbet licensed in Ireland?
