cheltenham betting friday - horse racing

Friday is Gold Cup day, and the Gold Cup gets all the airtime. But it's one race on a card of seven, and for a lot of punters the money is won or lost in the races either side of it. Friday has a juvenile championship where the horses have barely any form, two of the most competitive handicap hurdles of the week, a race for hunter chasers ridden by amateurs and a gruelling novice hurdle for stayers. It's also the last day, which does funny things to people's staking. Here's a calm way through it.

18+ only. There are no selections on this page and every price is made up for illustration. Cloudbet, which we link to, is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI).

Friday in a nutshell

The last day of the Festival is raced on the New Course, the same as Thursday. That's handy: if you watched day three, you've seen how the ground is riding and whether front-runners or hold-up horses have been doing better. Use that, but don't overreact to a single afternoon. Four or five races is a small sample.

The card changes a little from year to year and races get new sponsors, so treat this as the usual layout and check the official racecard:

The Triumph Hurdle: betting on four-year-olds

The Triumph is the championship race for four-year-old hurdlers, often called juveniles. Most have had only a handful of runs over hurdles, and plenty began their careers on the flat in Ireland, Britain or France. That leaves you with three kinds of evidence, none of them complete:

  1. Hurdles form this season. Usually two to four runs. Look at who they beat and how the race was run, not just the winning distance.
  2. Flat form. A horse rated highly on the flat has shown raw ability, but not that it can jump at speed in a big field.
  3. Stable signals. Big yards often have several juveniles. The jockey booking can hint at which one the stable rates most, though it's not proof.

Because the evidence is thin, the market tends to concentrate on one or two horses with a big reputation. A rough rule of thumb: the less form there is, the less confident you should be in a short price. If the favourite is 2.50 (40% implied) on the back of two hurdle runs against weak opposition, ask honestly whether you'd put it closer to 30%. If you would, the price is no good to you, and the value, if any, is elsewhere.

The County Hurdle and the Martin Pipe: two handicaps, two puzzles

Friday has two big handicap hurdles, and they're often among the hardest races of the week to solve. They're also where each-way punters and small-stake Dutchers live.

County Hurdle

A two-mile handicap hurdle with a large field, usually run at a fierce early pace. Two things tend to matter:

Martin Pipe

This one is for conditional jockeys, the young professionals who are still building their careers and may claim a weight allowance. That allowance can be a real edge for a horse near the top of the weights, but only if the rider is good enough to use it. Check how many winners a jockey has ridden this season and whether they've ridden at big meetings before.

Each-way and extra places: Friday sums

Many books offer extra places on the big handicaps during the Festival. Here's why it matters, using an invented example. You have €4 each-way (a €8 stake) on a horse at 20/1 (21.00) in the County Hurdle:

Place termsPlaces paidPlace return if placedResult if 5th
Standard (illustrative)4 at 1/4 odds€4 × (1 + 20/4) = €24Unplaced: −€8
Extra place offer (illustrative)5 at 1/4 odds€24Placed: +€16 overall
Bigger extra place (illustrative)6 at 1/5 odds€4 × (1 + 20/5) = €20Placed: +€12 overall

An extra place is only valuable if the fraction isn't cut and the win price isn't shorter than elsewhere. A book offering six places at a fifth might suit a horse you think will run well but not win, while four places at a quarter elsewhere might pay more if it does hit the frame high up. Compare the full package, not just the headline number of places.

The Albert Bartlett: where favourites go to struggle

The Albert Bartlett is a three-mile novice hurdle, and it has a reputation for surprises. Young horses are being asked to race over a long trip at a strong gallop up the hill, often for the first time at that level. Stamina doubts are everywhere, and the race can fall apart late.

Ways to approach it:

The Hunters' Chase: a different form book

Hunter chasers are often older horses, some former handicappers, ridden by amateurs and frequently qualified through point-to-points and hunter chases. The form you need lives in different places from most Festival races:

EvidenceWhat it tells youWatch out for
Point-to-point and hunter chase wins this seasonCurrent form and fitnessWeak opposition in small fields
Old rules form (as a handicapper)Ability at its peakAge catching up
RiderExperience at big meetingsRare rides, inexperienced at Cheltenham
Previous runs in this raceHandles the course and the occasionA good run years ago

Irish point-to-point form is often well regarded, but don't treat the green flag as a reason on its own. Prices in this race can be generous on horses the general public hasn't heard of, which is exactly when homework pays.

The mares' chase

Mares' races tend to have smaller fields and big gaps in class between the top few and the rest. That means short-priced favourites and limited each-way value. If you can't separate the top two or three, this may be a race to watch rather than bet. If you think the favourite is opposable, the "without the favourite" market, where offered, is worth a look.

Gold Cup day psychology

Friday is the last day, and three habits catch people out:

  1. The "get-out" bet. Down for the week, a punter puts a big stake on the last race to finish level. It's one race, usually a big-field handicap, and the odds don't care about the week's result.
  2. The Gold Cup accumulator. Doubling or trebling the Gold Cup with two other favourites looks tidy. With invented prices of 3.00, 2.50 and 4.00, a treble pays 30.00, but if those prices are fair it only wins about 3.3% of the time, roughly once in thirty attempts.
  3. Betting every race because it's the last chance. There's a next year, and plenty of racing in Ireland before then. Skip the races you don't have a view on.

A simple Friday staking plan

Let's say you set aside €60 for Friday, as part of a pre-planned four-day budget. One way to split it, as an example only:

Race typeStakeBet
Gold Cup€15Win single or each-way on your one opinion
Big handicap (County or Martin Pipe)€15Two or three small each-way bets with good place terms
Albert Bartlett or Hunters' Chase€10Each-way on a proven stayer
Triumph Hurdle€10Small win stake or nothing
Kept back€10Only used if a late non-runner changes a race you like

The point isn't these exact numbers. It's deciding before the first race so that Friday's mood doesn't decide for you.

Non-runners and Rule 4 on Friday

If a horse is withdrawn after you've taken a fixed price, your winnings on the others may be reduced under what's commonly called Rule 4. The deduction depends on the price of the withdrawn horse. For example, under the standard Rule 4 scale, if a horse priced at 3/1 (4.00) is taken out, the deduction is 25 cent in the euro from your winnings, and shorter-priced withdrawals mean bigger deductions (each bookmaker applies its own rules, so check their terms). Late withdrawals are more common when the ground changes, so watch the going on Friday morning.

Live betting and cash-out

Cash-out offers on a horse that's travelling well can be tempting, especially in the Gold Cup. The cash-out price includes a margin for the bookmaker, so on average you give up a little by taking it. It can still make sense if your circumstances have changed, but it isn't free insurance. Live pictures can also lag, so be careful betting in-running with fast-changing prices.

The New Course, the same as Thursday.

What is the Triumph Hurdle?

The championship race for four-year-old hurdlers. Many runners have very little form over hurdles.
