The Ryder Cup is coming to Ireland. The 2027 edition is scheduled for Adare Manor in County Limerick, the first time the event has been on Irish soil since The K Club hosted it in 2006. That means a lot of Irish punters who wouldn't normally touch golf betting will be having a go, and the Ryder Cup markets are nothing like a normal weekly tournament. There are no 150-runner fields here: it's Europe against the USA, match play, over three days. This guide explains how the odds work and how to put a sensible price on them yourself.
18+ only. This is general information, not betting advice. We don't name players or tip results, and every price on this page is a made-up example from a simple model. Cloudbet, which we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), so Irish complaint routes don't apply to it. The quick version
- The Ryder Cup is a team event between Europe and the USA, played every two years, with 28 matches worth one point each.
- A team needs 14½ points to win outright. If it finishes 14-14, the side holding the cup keeps it, but most betting markets treat the tie as its own result.
- The main markets are the outright winner, the tie, correct score, handicap, session betting and top points scorer.
- Home advantage has been a big factor in recent decades, though not an unbroken one. Europe will be the home side in 2027.
- Small edges on each match add up to big swings in the overall result, so the outright price is very sensitive to your assumptions.
- Pairings are only announced shortly before each session, so most match bets can't be placed far in advance.
How the Ryder Cup format works
Each side has 12 players and a non-playing captain. Most players qualify through points lists, and the captain adds a handful of picks; the exact numbers can change between editions, so check the current rules. Over three days there are 28 matches, all match play, where each hole is won, lost or halved and the match is decided by who wins more holes.
| Day | Sessions | Matches | Points available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | Foursomes (alternate shot) and fourballs (best ball) | 4 + 4 | 8 |
| Saturday | Foursomes and fourballs | 4 + 4 | 8 |
| Sunday | Singles | 12 | 12 |
| Total | 28 | 28 |
A win is worth one point and a halved match is worth half a point each. The order of foursomes and fourballs each day is set by the home captain, so it can vary. Not every player plays every session; captains rest players on Friday and Saturday, but all 12 play the Sunday singles.
The outright market: Europe, USA or a tie
Most bookies offer a three-way market: one team wins, the other team wins, or it finishes 14-14. A typical-looking example (made-up numbers) might be the home side at 1.80, the away side at 2.20 and the tie at 13.0.
| Example board | Home side | Away side | Tie | Book total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prices | 1.80 | 2.20 | 13.0 | 108.7% |
| Implied chance after removing margin | 51.1% | 41.8% | 7.1% |
A 108.7% book means a margin of almost 9%, much higher than the main football markets. Some bookies also offer a two-way "to lift the trophy" market where the holders win on a tie, so read the market name carefully. "To win" and "to retain" are not the same bet.
Putting your own price on it
The neat thing about the Ryder Cup is that you can build a rough model from just two numbers per format: the chance a team wins an average match and the chance it's halved. We ran three scenarios across all 28 matches, treating each match as separate:
| Scenario (home side per match) | Expected home points | Home wins | Tie 14-14 | Away wins | Fair home price | Fair away price | Fair tie price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Even: 42% win, 16% halve | 14.0 | 45.9% | 8.2% | 45.9% | 2.18 | 2.18 | 12.3 |
| Home edge: 46% win in pairs, 45% in singles | 14.9 | 61.3% | 7.6% | 31.2% | 1.63 | 3.21 | 13.2 |
| Strong home edge: 50% in pairs, 48% in singles | 15.8 | 73.9% | 6.2% | 19.9% | 1.35 | 5.03 | 16.2 |
Look at how sensitive that is. A shift of just four points in the chance of winning each match moves the home side from a coin flip to over 60%. That's why the outright market moves so much on team selection and course setup. It also shows why the tie is usually priced somewhere between about 12.0 and 16.0: in close contests it lands roughly one time in twelve or thirteen.
One honest caveat: real matches aren't independent. If one team is in better form or the course suits them, they tend to win lots of matches together, which makes lopsided results more common than this simple model suggests. Treat the model as a starting point, not gospel.
Is there value in the example board?
Comparing the made-up board above with the three scenarios, per €100 staked:
| Bet | Price | If it's even | If there's a home edge | If there's a strong home edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home side | 1.80 | −€17.40 | +€10.30 | +€33.00 |
| Tie | 13.0 | +€6.60 | −€1.20 | −€19.40 |
The answer depends entirely on which scenario you believe. That's the core of Ryder Cup betting: form your own honest view of how strong each side is, then see if the market agrees. If you can't decide between scenarios, there's no bet.
Correct score and winning margin
Correct score markets let you pick the exact final result, like 15½-12½. They're often grouped into bands. Here's how our "home edge" scenario spreads across results:
| Result band | Chance in the "home edge" scenario | Chance if it's even |
|---|---|---|
| Home wins 18+ points | 12.4% | 6.1% |
| Home wins 16 to 17½ | 24.8% | 17.5% |
| Home wins 14½ to 15½ | 24.2% | 22.3% |
| Tie 14-14 | 7.6% | 8.2% |
| Away wins 14½ to 15½ | 17.7% | 22.3% |
| Away wins 16 to 17½ | 10.8% | 17.5% |
| Away wins 18+ points | 2.7% | 6.1% |
Narrow wins are the single most likely bands, but the bigger margins carry more weight than people expect, especially because, as we said above, real results tend to be more lopsided than an independent model. Correct score margins are usually high, so only bet them if a band looks clearly mispriced.
Handicap betting
The handicap gives one side a points start. If the home side is −1.5, they need to win by at least two points, so 15-13 or better. In our models:
| Scenario | Home −1.5 (wins 15-13 or better) | Home −2.5 (15½-12½ or better) | Home −4.5 (16½-11½ or better) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Even | 37.9% | 30.4% | 17.8% |
| Home edge | 53.3% | 45.1% | 29.7% |
| Strong home edge | 66.9% | 59.2% | 43.0% |
A handicap near evens on −1.5 or −2.5 is often a neater way to back a favourite than the short outright price.

Session and match betting
Once the pairings for a session are announced, bookies price each match. A three-way match bet might look like 2.30 for one pair, 4.50 for the halve and 2.40 for the other pair, a book of about 107.4%. Some bookies also offer two-way prices where a halve is a push. If you think each pair has a 42% chance with a 16% halve, the fair two-way price is 2.00 each side; with a slight edge (46% win, 16% halve) it's about 1.83 against 2.21.
Foursomes and fourballs reward different things. Fourballs, where each player plays their own ball, tend to produce lots of birdies and favour aggressive players. Foursomes, where partners alternate shots, punish mistakes and suit steady players and well-matched partnerships. Session betting lets you back a side to win a whole session, such as 3-1 or better, which can be a nice way to use a view on one format.
Top points scorer and player specials
You can bet on the top points scorer for each team or overall. The key factor is how many matches a player is likely to play. A player sent out in all five sessions has up to five points available; one who sits out two sessions has only three. Watch the practice-day pairings and how captains talk about their plans. Dead heats are common in these markets, so check how the bookie settles ties, as it can cut your payout sharply.
What home advantage really means
In the Ryder Cup, the home captain has a lot of say over course setup, such as rough height, green speed and pin positions, and the home crowd is loud and partisan. Over recent decades the home side has had a strong record, though away teams do win. With Europe hosting at Adare Manor in 2027, expect European supporters to make up most of the crowd and the market to lean that way. Whether it leans too far is the question for your betting.
A simple Ryder Cup betting plan
- Set a budget for the week, including all match and session bets. €50 or €100 is plenty for most people.
- Decide your view on the overall strength of each side before looking at prices.
- Compare with the market using the scenarios above. Bet the outright or handicap only if there's a clear gap.
- Wait for pairings before match bets, and think about the format.
- Use small stakes on specials, such as top scorer and correct score, where margins are high.
- Don't chase on Sunday. The singles feel dramatic, but twelve matches at once is a lot of noise.

Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing "win" and "retain". On a 14-14 tie the holders keep the cup, but a three-way "win" bet on them loses.
- Betting with your heart. It'll be hard not to back Europe in Limerick. Bet with your head.
- Ignoring the margin. Outright Ryder Cup books often carry a bigger margin than everyday football markets.
- Betting top scorer before you know the schedule. A player who sits out sessions can't score.
- Overreacting to Friday morning. One session is only four points out of 28.
- Locking money up too early. Ante-post Ryder Cup bets can be tied up for many months, through team selection and form changes.
Is it legal to bet on the Ryder Cup from Ireland?
Yes, for adults. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) licenses bookmakers, and the first remote betting licences commenced on 1 July 2026. GRAI-licensed bookies come with Irish protections and complaint routes. Offshore sites like Cloudbet aren't GRAI-licensed, so those protections don't apply. Our guide to whether online betting is legal in Ireland explains more.

Our take
Ryder Cup betting comes down to one question: how much better is one side, match by match? Small differences per match turn into big differences in the outright odds, so be honest about your view, read the market rules on ties, use the handicap when the outright price is too short, and keep specials for small stakes. That way, Adare Manor will be memorable for the golf, not for your bank balance.
Questions players ask
Where is the 2027 Ryder Cup being played?
It is scheduled for Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland. It will be the first Ryder Cup in Ireland since The K Club hosted in 2006.
How many points do you need to win the Ryder Cup?
There are 28 points in total. A team needs 14½ to win outright. If it ends 14-14, the team holding the cup keeps it.
What happens to my bet if the Ryder Cup is a tie?
In a three-way market the tie is its own outcome, so bets on either team lose. In a two-way 'to lift the trophy' market, the holders are usually treated as winners. Check the bookie's rules.
What is the difference between foursomes and fourballs?
In foursomes, two partners hit one ball, taking alternate shots. In fourballs, each player plays their own ball and the better score on each hole counts for the pair.
Does home advantage matter in the Ryder Cup?
Historically it has mattered a lot. The home captain controls the course setup and the crowd is mostly behind the home side, though away teams can still win.
Can I bet on individual Ryder Cup matches?
Yes, once the pairings are announced before each session. Bookies offer three-way prices including the halve, and some offer two-way prices where a halve is a push.
Is Cloudbet licensed in Ireland?
No. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and isn't licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, so Irish complaint routes don't apply.
