crypto roulette ireland - roulette wheel close-up

Roulette is probably the simplest game in any casino, and that's exactly why people get caught out by it. You pick a number or a colour, the ball drops, done. Playing it with Bitcoin, Ethereum or USDT adds a few extra wrinkles on top: coin prices that move while you play, network fees, and the question of who's actually running the table. This guide walks you through the lot, the way a mate who's done the maths would explain it over a pint, so you know exactly what you're paying for every spin before you put a cent on the felt.

18+ only. This is general information, not a recommendation to gamble. Every number here comes from the rules of the wheel or a worked example, not from any particular casino. Ireland's regulator, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), has not issued any online casino licences yet. Cloudbet, which we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the GRAI, so Irish complaint routes won't help you if something goes wrong. If gambling is getting on top of you, Gambling Care is free, confidential and open 24/7 on 1800 936 725 (Northern Ireland: 08000 886 725).

The short answer

How the wheel actually works

A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36, split evenly into 18 red and 18 black, plus a single green zero. An American wheel adds a second green pocket, the double zero, for 38 in total. The zero isn't red or black, odd or even, high or low. It's the pocket that makes the casino its money.

Here's the trick in one sentence: the casino pays you as if the green pockets weren't there. A single number has 1 chance in 37 of landing on a European wheel, which would be fair at 36 to 1, but it pays 35 to 1. That one-unit gap, spread over every spin, is the house edge. Every other bet on the table is built the same way, which is why the edge comes out identical whatever you back.

Every bet on a European table, with the real odds

This table shows what each bet pays, how often it actually lands, what a fair payout would be with no zero, and what you lose on average per €10 staked.

BetNumbers coveredPaysChance per spinFair payoutAverage loss per €10
Straight (one number)135 to 12.70%36 to 1€0.27
Split217 to 15.41%17.5 to 1€0.27
Street311 to 18.11%11.33 to 1€0.27
Corner48 to 110.81%8.25 to 1€0.27
Six line65 to 116.22%5.17 to 1€0.27
Dozen or column122 to 132.43%2.08 to 1€0.27
Red/black, odd/even, 1-18/19-36181 to 1 (evens)48.65%1.06 to 1€0.27

So whether you're the type who sticks a fiver on red or the type who sprinkles chips across 20 numbers, the long-run cost per euro is the same. What changes is the ride: single numbers swing wildly, evens bets move in small steps. Pick your bet for the kind of session you want, not because you think it's "better odds". It isn't.

European vs American vs French: the one choice that really matters

If you only take one thing from this page, make it this. The wheel type matters more than anything else you control at a roulette table.

Wheel / rulesPocketsHouse edge on most betsNotes
European (single zero)372.70%The standard in Irish and European casinos
French, with la partage or en prison371.35% on even-money bets, 2.70% on the restHalf your evens stake comes back (or is held for one more spin) when zero lands
American (zero and double zero)385.26%Common on US-facing sites
American "top line" (0, 00, 1, 2, 3)387.89%The worst bet on any roulette table

Crypto casinos often list several roulette tables side by side with almost the same name. Open the rules or info button on each one before you sit down. Look for "single zero", "European" or "French", and check whether la partage applies to the table you're on. If you see a 00 on the layout, walk on.

What an hour at the table really costs

House edge sounds small until you multiply it by speed. A live dealer table might deal something like 30 to 60 spins an hour; an automated RNG table can easily do 150 to 300 if you keep clicking. Average loss is simply spins × stake × edge:

Spins per hourStake per spinEuropean (2.70%)French evens (1.35%)American (5.26%)
40 (live table)€2€2.16€1.08€4.21
40 (live table)€5€5.41€2.70€10.53
150 (fast RNG)€2€8.11€4.05€15.79
150 (fast RNG)€5€20.27€10.14€39.47
300 (autoplay)€5€40.54€20.27€78.95

The lesson: the same €5 stake can cost you €5 an hour or €40 an hour depending on how fast you play. Autoplay is the silent killer. If you want roulette to last, play a live table, take your time between spins and switch autoplay off.

What a session actually looks like

Averages are one thing; nobody plays forever. Let's look at a realistic session: 100 spins at €5 a time on red, on a European wheel. We worked out the exact chances of every result.

Result after 100 spinsChance
Down more than €5020.3%
Down €10 to €5036.5%
Exactly level7.7%
Up €10 to €5027.0%
Up more than €508.5%

So you finish ahead about 35.5% of the time, which is why roulette feels beatable: plenty of nights end in profit. But the average result is a loss of about €13.51 (2.70% of the €500 you put through), and the losing nights outnumber the winning ones. That pattern, frequent small wins hiding a steady drain, is what keeps tables busy.

Compare the single-number player: 100 spins at €1 on one number.

Hits in 100 spinsNet resultChance
0−€1006.5%
1−€6417.9%
2−€2824.7%
3+€822.4%
4+€4415.1%
5+€808.0%

About half the time (50.9%) you'll get three or more hits and finish up, but one night in fifteen you won't see your number at all. Same edge, very different feelings.

Betting systems: why none of them work

Every roulette forum has someone swearing by a system. Here's the honest truth: a system can change the shape of your results, but it can't change the 2.70%. Each spin is independent, and the wheel has no memory of what you bet last time.

Martingale (double after every loss)

The idea: bet €1 on red, double after a loss, go back to €1 after a win, so each sequence nets €1. It works right up until it doesn't. Tables have maximum bets, and your wallet has a bottom. With a €1 start, here's what a losing streak costs:

Table maxDoublings you can makeChance a sequence bustsLoss when it doesAverage result per sequence
€1007about 1 in 106−€127−€0.21
€5009about 1 in 403−€511−€0.27
€1,00010about 1 in 784−€1,023−€0.31
€5,00013about 1 in 5,792−€8,191−€0.41

One in 403 sounds safe. It isn't, over a long night: at a €500 limit, the chance of hitting at least one bust is 11.7% over 50 sequences, 22.0% over 100, 39.2% over 200 and 71.1% over 500. You win €1 a pop for hours and then lose €511 in ten minutes. And look at the last column: the average stays negative whatever the limit.

Reverse martingale, d'Alembert and Fibonacci

Reverse martingale (doubling after wins) gives you rare big runs and lots of small losses. D'Alembert (raise by one unit after a loss, drop by one after a win) and Fibonacci (follow the 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 sequence after losses) are gentler versions of chasing. None of them touch the edge. They all assume a win is "due" after losses, and it never is.

The "James Bond" spread

A famous one: on a €200 spin, put €140 on 19-36, €50 on the six line 13-18 and €10 on zero. You win something on 25 of the 37 numbers, which feels brilliant. But when 1-12 comes in (12 numbers out of 37) you lose the whole €200. Work it through and the average is −€5.41 per €200 spin: exactly 2.70%. Covering more numbers just means more frequent small wins and rarer big losses.

Streaks, hot numbers and the gambler's fallacy

After five reds in a row, the chance of red on the next spin is still 18 in 37, or 48.65%. The wheel doesn't know. What surprises people is how normal long streaks are. We worked out the chance of seeing a run of the same colour at least this long in a session:

Spins in sessionRun of 5+Run of 6+Run of 7+Run of 8+Run of 10+
10095.6%75.7%48.2%26.7%6.8%
20099.8%94.4%74.1%47.3%13.7%
500100%99.9%96.8%80.4%31.5%

So in a 200-spin night you'll very likely see seven of the same colour on the trot, and it means nothing. The "history" board beside the wheel is there to make you feel like you're spotting a pattern. Ignore it. Same goes for "hot" and "cold" numbers: on a fair wheel they're noise.

What's different about playing with crypto

The game is identical. What changes is the money side, and it's worth thinking about before you deposit.

Price risk on your balance

If your balance is held in Bitcoin or Ethereum, its euro value moves while you play. Say you deposit €100 worth of BTC:

BTC price move during sessionBreak even at the tableLose 10% at the table
−10%€90.00€81.00
−5%€95.00€85.50
0%€100.00€90.00
+5%€105.00€94.50
+10%€110.00€99.00

A bad day for Bitcoin can hurt more than a bad night at the wheel. If you want your roulette budget to stay a roulette budget, a stablecoin like USDT or USDC pegged to the dollar takes most of that swing out (you still carry the euro-dollar exchange rate). Some casinos also let you display balances in euro while holding crypto; that changes the display, not the risk.

Fees on the way in and out

Every deposit and withdrawal pays a network fee, and if you bought the crypto on an exchange there's a spread on top. These costs come off before you've spun once, so a lot of small deposits is the expensive way to play. Pick a low-fee network your casino supports, double-check the address and network before you send, and remember crypto transfers can't be reversed. Our guides on buying crypto for betting in Ireland and depositing at a crypto casino go through it step by step.

Bonuses and wagering

Casino bonuses often count roulette at a reduced rate towards wagering, or not at all, and some ban covering most of the table to clear a bonus. Read the terms first. A bonus you can't clear on roulette is worth nothing to a roulette player, and breaking the rules can void your winnings.

Live dealer, RNG or provably fair: which table?

Table typeHow the result is madeSpeedWhat to check
Live dealerA real wheel and croupier streamed from a studioSlow, roughly 30 to 60 spins an hourSingle zero, la partage, table limits
RNG (software)A random number generator picks the pocketAs fast as you clickWho supplies the game, any testing certificates
Provably fairResult built from a server seed, your client seed and a nonce, which you can verify afterFastThat you can see and change your client seed, and that the verifier works

Provably fair is a genuine plus of crypto casinos: it lets you prove a spin wasn't changed after you bet. It doesn't lower the house edge, though, and it doesn't prove the casino will pay out. Our provably fair guide shows how to run the check yourself. For a slower, more social game, live tables are hard to beat, and the slower pace saves you money as the cost-per-hour table showed.

Where to play crypto roulette

Cloudbet, which we link to on this page, runs a crypto casino alongside its sportsbook. We won't list specific roulette titles here because casino lobbies change; check its lobby for single-zero European or French tables and read each table's rules. Whatever site you use, look for single-zero wheels, clear table limits, reasonable withdrawal terms and responsible gambling tools like deposit limits and time-outs. Our safest online casino guide has a fuller checklist.

Is crypto roulette legal in Ireland?

Ireland's Gambling Regulation Act set up the GRAI, which is bringing in licences in stages. It started with betting licences; licences for online casino games aren't expected until later, with applications for gaming licences scheduled to open in 2027 or 2028. That means right now no online casino, crypto or otherwise, holds a GRAI casino licence. Offshore casinos like Cloudbet (licensed in Curaçao) operate outside the Irish system, so you have no Irish regulator to complain to if a withdrawal is held up or an account is closed. Our page on whether online casinos are legal in Ireland and our crypto gambling legality guide explain the detail. On tax, the general rule is that gambling winnings aren't taxed for Irish players, but crypto price gains can be a different matter, so speak to a tax adviser if you're moving serious amounts.

A sensible way to play

  1. Set the budget first, in euro, and treat it as the cost of a night out. If you lose it, you're done.
  2. Hold it in a stablecoin if you don't want coin prices adding to the swings.
  3. Find a single-zero table, ideally French rules with la partage if you like even-money bets.
  4. Pick your stake so the budget covers at least 50 to 100 spins. With €100, that's €1 to €2 a spin.
  5. Play slowly, with autoplay off. Speed is the biggest cost you can control.
  6. Set a stop-win too. If you're up 50% on the budget, cash some out. Profits left on the table usually go back.
  7. Use the casino's limits: deposit limits, session reminders and time-outs exist for a reason.

Our take

Crypto roulette is the same old wheel with a new way to pay. The maths is fixed: 2.70% on a single-zero table, 1.35% on evens with la partage, and more than double that on an American wheel. Systems don't beat it, streaks mean nothing, and speed is what really eats your money. Choose the right table, play slowly, keep your balance in something that won't swing, and treat every euro on the felt as spent. Do that and it can be a bit of craic rather than a hole in your wallet.

Questions players ask

Is crypto roulette different from normal roulette?

No. The wheel, the bets and the odds are the same. Only the payment method changes, which adds coin price risk and network fees.

What is the house edge on crypto roulette?

2.70% on a European single-zero wheel, 5.26% on an American double-zero wheel, and 1.35% on even-money bets at French tables with la partage or en prison.

Which roulette bet has the best odds?

On a European wheel every bet has the same 2.70% edge. The best deal is an even-money bet on a French table with la partage, at 1.35%. The worst is the American top line at 7.89%.

Does the martingale system work on crypto roulette?

No. It wins small amounts often but loses big when a losing streak hits the table limit or your bankroll. The average result stays negative.

Is crypto roulette legal in Ireland?

No online casino currently holds a GRAI licence, and offshore crypto casinos like Cloudbet operate outside the Irish system, so you have no Irish regulator to turn to. Read our legality guide for detail.

Are crypto roulette games rigged?

Provably fair games let you check a spin wasn't changed after you bet. That doesn't lower the house edge or guarantee a withdrawal, so pick a casino carefully.

Should I play roulette with Bitcoin or USDT?

If you want your budget to stay steady, a stablecoin like USDT takes out most of the price swing. Bitcoin adds its own ups and downs on top of the game's.
