how to bet on nfl from ireland - American football

The NFL has a proper following in Ireland now. Sunday evenings from September to February have become a ritual for a lot of people: the early games at six o'clock, the late games at nine, and the brave ones staying up for the night game. If you fancy a bet on it, the good news is that American football is one of the best-covered sports in the world for betting markets. The bad news is that the odds come in a format most Irish punters have never used, and the main market, the point spread, works a bit differently from what you're used to. This guide sorts all that out.

18+ only. This is general information, not betting advice. We don't name teams, players or fixtures, and every price here is a made-up example from a simple model. Cloudbet, which we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), so Irish complaint routes don't apply to it. The quick version

How the NFL season works

The NFL has 32 teams split into two conferences, the AFC and the NFC, each with four divisions of four teams. The regular season runs from early September to early January, with each team playing 17 games over 18 weeks (one week off, called a bye). Seven teams from each conference make the play-offs: the four division winners plus three wild cards. The top seed in each conference skips the first round. The play-offs run through January and finish with the Super Bowl in February.

That shape matters for betting. Seventeen games is a small sample, so every result moves the market's view of a team. Late in the season, some teams have nothing left to play for and may rest starters, which can make lines unreliable. In the play-offs, every game is knock-out, so there are no ties: tied games go to overtime until someone wins.

What time are NFL games in Ireland?

Most games are played on Sunday afternoon and evening US Eastern time. Here's how the usual slots convert. Note the one awkward week: Ireland's clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, but the US changes on the first Sunday of November, so for about a week the gap is an hour shorter.

Monday and Thursday night games also kick off in the small hours of the following day in Ireland. Kick-off slots can shift, especially for international games and holiday fixtures, so always check the listed time on the day. And a word of honest advice: don't place bets at 2am you wouldn't place at 2pm. Tired betting is bad betting.

American odds explained

US-facing markets often show odds as American numbers, like −150 or +130. Most offshore and Irish bookies let you switch to decimal in your settings, but it helps to understand both.

AmericanDecimalImplied chance
−3001.3375.0%
−2001.5066.7%
−1501.6760.0%
−1101.9152.4%
+1302.3043.5%
+1502.5040.0%
+2503.5028.6%

For the full walkthrough, our guides to moneyline betting and what the minus sign means cover it in more detail.

The moneyline

The moneyline is a straight bet on who wins the game, overtime included. Say a game is priced −150 for the favourite and +130 for the underdog. In decimal, that's 1.67 and 2.30. Add up the implied chances (60.0% + 43.5%) and you get 103.5%, which means a margin of 3.5% for the bookie. Strip the margin out and the fair chances are about 58.0% and 42.0%.

Regular-season NFL games can end in a tie if overtime doesn't settle them. It's rare, but it happens. Bookies handle ties differently on the moneyline, often treating the bet as a push (stake returned), so check the rules before you bet.

The point spread: the main NFL market

The point spread is a handicap. The favourite gives points and the underdog gets them. If the favourite is −6.5, they need to win by seven or more for a bet on them to win. If you back the underdog at +6.5, you win if they win outright or lose by six or fewer. Both sides are usually priced near 1.91.

To find value, you need your own idea of the expected winning margin. A simple model treats the final margin as spreading out around that expectation with a typical spread of about 13.5 points. Here's what it gives:

Your expected margin for the favouriteWins outrightCovers −2.5Covers −3.5Covers −6.5Covers −7.5
1 point51.5%45.6%42.7%34.2%31.5%
3 points57.3%51.5%48.5%39.8%36.9%
4 points60.2%54.4%51.5%42.7%39.8%
6 points65.8%60.2%57.3%48.5%45.6%
7 points68.5%63.1%60.2%51.5%48.5%
9 points73.6%68.5%65.8%57.3%54.4%
10 points75.9%71.1%68.5%60.2%57.3%

At a price of 1.91, here's what different cover chances are worth per €100 staked over the long run:

Your cover chanceExpected return at 1.91
50.0%−€4.50
52.4%about €0 (break-even)
55.0%+€5.00
57.0%+€8.80

So if you think a favourite should win by about nine and the market has them at −6.5, the model says they cover about 57% of the time, a decent edge. If the market has them at −9.5, there's nothing there. The skill is in the expected margin, not the maths.

Key numbers: why 3 and 7 matter

American football scoring comes in chunks: a field goal is 3 points and a touchdown with the extra point is 7. Because of that, final margins land on 3 and 7 far more often than on neighbouring numbers. The smooth model above doesn't capture this, so treat it as a rough guide.

In practice, the difference between −2.5 and −3.5, or between −6.5 and −7.5, is bigger than one point suggests. If you can get a favourite at −2.5 instead of −3.5, or an underdog at +3.5 instead of +2.5, that half point lands on a common result. Shopping around for the best line, or waiting for one to move through a key number, is one of the few genuine edges a recreational punter can get.

Totals (over/under)

The total is a bet on the combined points scored by both teams, including overtime in most rules. Weather, pace and playing style matter most. Wind is the big one: strong wind hurts passing and kicking, which usually drags scoring down. Indoor stadiums take weather out of the equation.

Using a simple model with a typical spread of about 10 points around your expected total, here's the chance of going over different lines:

Your expected totalOver 41.5Over 44.5Over 47.5Over 50.5
4044.0%32.6%22.7%14.7%
4356.0%44.0%32.6%22.7%
4667.4%56.0%44.0%32.6%
4977.3%67.4%56.0%44.0%
5285.3%77.3%67.4%56.0%

As with spreads, you're looking for a gap of a couple of points between your number and the market's before it's worth a bet at 1.91.

Parlays and teasers

A parlay is the American word for an accumulator. With four legs at 1.91 each, you'd get odds of about 13.28. Sounds lovely, but look at what it takes:

Legs at 1.91Combined oddsChance if each leg is 52.4%Expected return if each leg is 50%Expected return if each leg is 55%
23.6427.4%−8.9%+10.2%
36.9614.4%−13.0%+15.7%
413.287.5%−17.0%+21.5%
525.353.9%−20.8%+27.6%
648.402.1%−24.4%+34.0%

If you genuinely have an edge on every leg, parlays multiply it. If you're closer to coin-flipping, which most people are, they multiply the loss. Keep them small. Teasers, where you move the spread in your favour across several games for a lower payout, are another US speciality; they're only worth a look if the moved lines cross 3 and 7, and the pricing varies a lot between bookies.

Season win totals and futures

Before and during the season you can bet on a team's total wins, division winners, conference winners and the Super Bowl. Win totals are a nice way to use a view you've formed over the summer. Here's what a team's true game-by-game strength means over 17 games, from a simple model:

Average chance of winning each gameExpected wins8+ wins9+ wins10+ wins11+ wins12+ wins
40%6.835.9%19.9%9.2%3.5%1.1%
50%8.568.5%50.0%31.5%16.6%7.2%

70%11.998.7%96.0%89.5%77.5%59.7%

The catch with futures is that your money is tied up for months and the margins are usually higher than on single games. One injury to a quarterback can sink a season bet in October. Keep stakes small.

Player props

Props are bets on individual stats: passing yards, rushing yards, receptions, touchdowns. They're hugely popular and great fun, but margins are often higher than on spreads and totals, and limits can be low. Props depend heavily on role and game script: a team expected to be well ahead tends to run the ball late, while a team chasing the game throws a lot. If you bet props, think about how the game is likely to unfold first.

Live betting during NFL games

American football is stop-start, so in-play markets reprice between almost every play. That sounds like an opportunity, but the bookies' models are fast and their margins on live markets are usually wider than before kick-off. Where live betting can make sense is when something happens that a model might be slow to weigh up, such as a key player going off injured or the wind picking up badly in the second half. Even then, keep stakes at or below your normal unit, decide in advance what would make you bet, and don't use in-play markets to chase a pre-match loss. If you're watching on a stream that lags behind the live action, you're also at a disadvantage against faster feeds.

A Sunday routine for Irish NFL punters

  1. Midweek: note the opening lines and form your own expected margin and total for the games you care about.
  2. Friday: check injury reports. Teams list players as out, doubtful or questionable.
  3. Sunday afternoon: check final inactive lists, which come out roughly 90 minutes before kick-off, and the weather for outdoor games.
  4. Compare your numbers with the market. Bet only where the gap is real, ideally on the right side of 3 or 7.
  5. Stake small and level: one unit per bet, a small parlay at most.
  6. Stop before the night game unless you'd decided on that bet in daylight.

Mistakes Irish punters make on the NFL

Is it legal to bet on the NFL from Ireland?

Yes, for adults. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) licenses bookmakers, and the first remote betting licences commenced on 1 July 2026. GRAI-licensed bookies come with Irish protections and complaint routes. Offshore sites like Cloudbet aren't GRAI-licensed, so those protections don't apply. Our guide to whether online betting is legal in Ireland explains more.

Our take

Betting on the NFL from Ireland is easier than it looks once you crack the odds format and the spread. Learn to convert American odds, form your own expected margin and total, respect 3 and 7, wait for the injury news, and keep parlays small. Do that, and NFL Sundays become a lot more interesting without becoming expensive.

Questions players ask

What time do NFL games start in Ireland?

The early Sunday games usually start at 6pm Irish time and the late games around 9pm. The Sunday night game starts after 1am on Monday. For about a week in late October and early November the gap is an hour shorter because the clocks change on different dates.

What does −110 mean in NFL betting?

It's American odds for about 1.91 in decimal. You stake €110 to win €100. You need to win about 52.4% of bets at −110 to break even.

How does the point spread work?

The favourite gives points and the underdog gets them. If you back a team at −6.5, they need to win by seven or more. If you back the underdog at +6.5, they need to win or lose by six or fewer.

Why are 3 and 7 key numbers in the NFL?

A field goal is worth 3 points and a converted touchdown is worth 7, so final winning margins land on those numbers more often than on others.

Does overtime count in NFL bets?

For most moneyline, spread and total bets, yes. Regular-season games can still end in a tie, and bookies settle ties in different ways, so check the rules.

Is a parlay the same as an accumulator?

Yes. A parlay is the American name for an accumulator. All legs must win, and the margin compounds with each leg.

Is Cloudbet licensed in Ireland?

No. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and isn't licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, so Irish complaint routes don't apply.
